Work life: The school-run mumpreneurs

A new wave of enterprising mothers is proving that you don’t need to be chained to the desk in order to boost your bank balance. Charlotte Pearson Methven reports on the rise of the new pin-money posse.

Louise Webster, who founded the website beyondtheschoolrun.com – aimed at enabling mums to ‘use their skills and remain engaged with the wider world after having children’ – two years ago, says that the time has never been riper for women to earn flexibly.

Having children helps, she argues, as the mums from your baby class, nursery and school constitute a ‘ready-made network’ of potential business partners and clients, or at the very least, sources of inspiration and people to bounce ideas off. ‘Women are amazing collectively – it’s something about that female energy.’
